Philippine National Security Advisor Yainu Threatens Full Ban of TikTok

MANILA, Philippines, October 30, 2023-Philippine national security adviser Yanew said on October 28 that TikTok (the overseas version of TikTok) may face a complete ban if there is conclusive evidence that the app is being used by China for intelligence spying and cyber attacks.

"Considering the Chinese background of these applications, it is very likely that they may obtain users' personal data and privacy information," Yanu stressed in a statement."

He further pointed out that if there is enough evidence that China is abusing TikTok to carry out cyber attacks on the Philippines, he will not hesitate to recommend a total ban of TikTok.

"We are not rashly announcing that TikTok will be banned in the Philippines. We will first investigate with government departments and agencies responsible for security matters. If we find further evidence and circumstances, we will adjust accordingly," he said."

The national security adviser also revealed that he has ordered a special task force led by Assistant Adviser Maraya to speed up the investigation into a possible data breach caused by TikTok.

He reiterated that the National Security Council will continue to evaluate the security of TikTok applications to ensure the protection of Philippine users and government systems.

"The recent incidents of cyber intrusions are of concern, so we asked Assistant Consultant Maraya to submit a report on how to develop a memorandum or policy to ensure the security of our data and digital systems," he said."

Yanu added: "Our Statistics Agency and Philippine Health Insurance and other institutions have been invaded, so we must be prepared."

The National Security Council is considering the possibility of banning government military and police personnel from using TikTok to prevent potential data breaches.

In view of concerns that TikTok may provide sensitive information to the Chinese government, the United States, India, Canada and other countries have taken measures to ban TikTok owned by Chinese companies on government mobile phones and prohibit government personnel from using the app.
