60% of Filipinos Support SIM Card Compulsory Registration

According to a recent poll released by the Social Weather Station, 60% of Filipinos support the "SIM Card Compulsory Registration Act", while 17% disagree or do not support it, and 23% say they have not decided.

This puts the measure's net approval rating at 44%. If analyzed in terms of regions, the capital region is 43%, Luzon is 47%, Mindanao is 45%, and the Mishiye area is 34%.

The poll was conducted from September 29 to October 2, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.) formally signed the measure bill into law on October 10.

The SIM Card Compulsory Registration Law requires public telecommunications entities or telecommunications operators, as well as all distributors, to request valid identity documents of customers and register information when selling SIM cards.

At the same time, 66% of the interviewees believed that the move would help crack down on crimes via SMS. 25% said they had not decided and 10% said they could not stop the crimes.

In addition, only 48% of the interviewees believed that sellers or telecom operators could properly protect users' private information. 33% said they had not decided and 20% said they did not believe it.

If analyzed in terms of regions, the national net trust is 28%, of which Mindanao Island is 37%, Luzon Island is 33%, and the Mishiye area is 17%, while the capital area is only 8%.

Macos earlier assured the public that information during the registration of the SIM card will be considered "absolutely confidential unless the written consent of the user is obtained to be accessed by others".
