According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the propeller shaft of MT King Rich broke at about 1 p.m. on November 18, causing seawater to enter the engine room of the chemical tanker. The crew abandoned the tanker, ensuring that the engine and fuel tank did not leak and that there was no chemical cargo on board at the time of the accident.

At about 5 pm that day, the crew of the "acts of heroism" found and rescued the crew about 81 nautical miles west-northwest of Badoc Island. The crew were on a life raft at that time.

"acts of heroism" arrived at the port of Subic, Samdecins Province, on 19 November, carrying the crew of "MT King Rich. The Philippine Coast Guard said the rescued crew were in good health.

The Philippine Coast Guard Air Force conducted an aerial survey on November 20 to check the condition of the chemical tanker in distress still floating in the waters off Bardok Island.
