What are the ways to get a US Green Card?

There are several ways for foreigners to obtain a green card or become permanent residents: through family, work, making major investments, or conforming to one of the specific immigration categories.

Family-based

Make the family

It is easier for members to reunite with relatives of U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents:

If you are the spouse, child, sibling, parent or fiance of a U.S. citizen, you can become a legal permanent resident if your relative or engagement person files a petition with the U.S. Immigration Service or the U.S. Embassy in your country of residence.

If you are a spouse or unmarried child of a legal permanent resident, you can obtain a green card if a relative holding a green card applies to the U.S. Immigration Bureau or the U.S. Embassy in your country of residence.

However, other relatives do not enjoy these rights. If you are an aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, grandmother, or grandfather of a U.S. citizen; or you are a brother, sister, parent, or fiance of a person who holds a green card; you will not be able to obtain a green card based on "family relationships.

Based on employment

If you are not eligible for a family-based guarantee (or even if you are), you can still obtain a green card based on your work, whether as a priority worker or a non-priority worker.

Priority staff

Priority staff (also known as EB-1) refer to people who have skills that the United States considers scarce or particularly needed. Priority staff include people with extraordinary abilities, outstanding researchers and professors, and multinational executives and managers. These highly skilled workers do not need to undergo a labor certification process, which is a lengthy process to test the local job market in the United States and protect the interests of American workers.

Non-priority staff

This is a broad classification that includes individuals with graduate degrees, individuals without graduate degrees, and skilled and unskilled workers. Generally, non-priority staff members need to complete the labor certification process to ensure that American workers cannot fill vacant positions satisfactorily. Exceptions to this rule relate to immunity from national interests (NIW).

Based on investment

Foreign entrepreneurs from any country are eligible for a green card if they invest US $500000 to US $1 million in a new enterprise and employ at least ten (10) U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. This type of visa can issue 10000 immigration visas every year, aiming to stimulate overseas investment and employment.

Based on special immigration

Certain immigrants are eligible to be designated special immigrants, including: religious workers, doctors, certain former government and military officials, and retired officials of international organizations. In addition, certain groups are granted the right to immigrate to the United States or receive amnesty.
