He and then-Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile joined hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered on Yisha Avenue to oppose the Marcos regime.

Last year, on the 35th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, former President Lamus urged Filipinos to maintain their spirit. "The EDSA Revolution of 1986 is still a glorious moment for our country because it represents the best of Filipinos," he said."

During his tenure, the death penalty abolished in 1987 was reinstated and subsequently abolished again in 2006 by his successor, Gloria Arroyo.

Lamus received a degree in civil engineering from the National University of the Philippines and studied at West Point.

He married Amelita Martinez in 1954 and had five children.

It is reported that Lan Mu Si is often seen with an unlit cigar in his mouth and has been an active runner in his later years.
