7.2 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines! Strong tremor! Serious damage!

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said an offshore earthquake occurred in the southern Philippine province of West Davor on Friday (November 17) afternoon with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2.

Xinhua News Agency reported that the institute said that the earthquake occurred at 4:14 p.m. local time (4:14 p.m. Singapore time) with a focal depth of 10 kilometers and was located about 30 kilometers southwest of the town of Sarangani.

The Philippine Volcano Seismological Institute said the tectonic quake would trigger aftershocks and cause damage. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had a magnitude of 6.7 and said no tsunami was expected.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Strong tremors were also felt around Mindanao, including General Santos City and nearby provinces.

The Philippine Islands are located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and have frequent seismic activity.
