Two Philippine Telecom Companies Sign Undersea Optical Cable Agreements with China Telecom and Other Companies

On November 8, local time, GLOBE, one of the Philippine telecom giants, said that it had formed a consortium with several Asian telecom companies, including DITO Telecommunity, to reach an investment agreement worth 0.3 billion US dollars to build a submarine cable system in Southeast Asia.

The Globe said in a statement that the submarine cable system is designed to increase data capacity in the region and boost local capacity.

In addition to GLOBE and DITO in the Philippines, the consortium includes China Telecom Global Limited (CTG), Singapore Telecom Limited (Singtel) and Brunei's Unified National Network Corporation (UNN).

The planned Asian connection cable (ALC) will be about 6000 kilometers long, mainly connecting Hong Kong and Singapore, with branch lines entering the Philippines, Brunei and Hainan, China.

HMN Technologies Co. Ltd. Awarded to the system supplier, it is expected to complete the construction of the Asian connection cable in the third quarter of 2025.

Globe said: "Asian connection cables are seen as providing additional super capacity in Asia and improving the flexibility of international traffic. The system will have at least 8 pairs of optical fibers and a minimum relay design capacity of 18 terabits per second, adding more capacity and diversity to existing networks in the region."
