Date: 2022-06-23 PageView: 2043

If you were not born in the Philippines or your parents are not Filipino, you can still apply for citizenship, provided you meet a range of criteria. In order to make foreigners naturalized as Filipino citizens, how to apply for Philippine citizenship? Is dual nationality allowed?

菲律宾公民身份如何申请?是否允许双重国籍?

There need to be several criteria. If you were not born in the Philippines and your parents are not Filipino, then you must meet these criteria to apply for citizenship:

attaining the age of 21 on the day of application;

Have lived in the Philippines for at least 10 consecutive years;

Has good moral character and supports the Philippine Constitution;

Have at least P5,000 real estate, money or rich jobs;

Must be able to speak or read English, Spanish or one of the country's other major languages;

If the applicant has minor children, he must have enrolled in a school approved by the Education Bureau.

According to your situation, there are three main ways to become a naturalized Filipino citizen.

1. Court-If you are a foreigner married to a Filipino, the judicial process will allow you to become a Filipino citizen.

2. The Office of the Solicitor General-OSG has the authority to approve applications for naturalization. The handling fee is approximately P40,000.

3. Meeting Behavior-If you have made a significant contribution to the public life of the Philippines, your application for Filipino naturalization can be sponsored by a senator or member of Congress.

The Philippine government does allow dual citizenship. However, you must go to the nearest Philippine consulate, fill out some paperwork to declare your dual nationality, and then reapply for a new Philippine passport.

For those who wish to stay in the Philippines permanently, there are two types of immigrant visas. Which one you can apply for depends on your specific situation.

Immigration visa (non-quota or quota)

Immigrants are foreigners who wish to live permanently in the Philippines without renouncing their citizenship. Foreigners can obtain immigration status if they have reciprocal agreements that allow Filipinos to become immigrants. However, the Philippines has an immigration quota of 50 persons per calendar year, any one nationality.

You may be eligible to become a non-quota immigrant based on the following conditions:

Marriage-For foreign spouses or unmarried children of Filipino nationals under the age of 21, if accompanying them to the Philippines or joining the Philippines.

Returning residents-those foreigners who have obtained permanent visas and returned from foreign travel.

Returning former Filipino citizen-a born Filipino with citizenship from another country.

Balikbayan status-former Filipino citizens visiting the Philippines (balikbayans if they have given up, they need to provide proof of former Filipino citizenship). This is valid for one year and the applicant must pay a monthly extension fee. One-year visa-free stay extends to spouses and minor children, provided they travel with balikbayan.

If you do not qualify as a non-quota immigrant under any conditions, then you must apply for a quota immigrant visa. If you apply for a quota visa, you need to attend a personal interview with the Immigration Bureau and provide documents that prove that you can financially support yourself.
