According to Philippine media, on the evening of August 1, Philippine authorities raided an organization suspected of online fraud in Pasai and detained 650 people, including foreigners.
464 of them are Filipinos and the rest are Chinese and Indian.
The agency is reportedly in a five-story building. During the search, Philippine authorities found hundreds of mobile phones, computers, SIM cards and other equipment. Files with a "pig-killing disk" script and a text message bombardment device were also found.
During the raids, conversations between the victims (mostly white foreigners) and the suspected scammers could still be seen on the screens of some computers.
Deputy Minister of Justice Nicholas Felix Ty said the center was suspected of carrying out "pig-killing" and cryptocurrency scams.
"Usually, in such operations, we have an asset internally, and that asset is our lead to gather intelligence," Tai said."
According to him, the authorities are still identifying the leaders of the illegal activity, which they suspect is being manipulated by the Chinese.
The company is registered and has a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) license, but it is alleged that it is only a cover to cover up its scam activities.
Authorities are still making an inventory and gathering details of those involved found inside the premises. They are also investigating how scammers could still operate despite the implementation of the SIM card registration law.
